Homework Time

The Center for Afterschool Education's Homework Time Action Pack helps educators make homework time a time for active learning and development that goes beyond assignments.
Homework Time
Homework time is part of many afterschool programs, often accounting for 50% or more of the time children spend in the program.
Make the most of it. Design homework time deliberately to promote teamwork, independent learning, study skills, time management, relationship building, and more—along with working on the assignments.
What makes homework time work well?
- More like home than study hall Put the feeling of home back in homework, with a relaxed atmosphere, work with friends, snacks, music and mini-break activities.
- Think “whole child,” not just assignments Build life and learning skills by with peer and cross-age work groups, helping with time management, and providing appropriate levels of choice about work plans and activities.
- Build relationships Staff don't need to be content experts to make an important difference. Use effective helping strategies, and tap this time to show you truly care about children's success.
- Clarify everyone's expectations Learn what parents want and what teachers are looking for. What can the program provide? Keep communications open with teachers and parents. Set realistic goals and tailor them to children's needs as much as possible.
