Fieldwork

connecting with communitiesAt the Center for Afterschool Education, we believe it takes practice to know practice—and especially to teach it. Staff at the Center know practice from years of experience in afterschool, school teaching, administration, parks and recreation, museum education, and more. And we keep learning, by operating pre-K through high school afterschool programs at selected sites in Philadelphia, PA.

Through these programs, we test approaches, content and staff development in the real world of tight budgets, tight timelines and high expectations. The experiences deeply inform our publications, trainings and technical assistance across the country.

Changing Practice Field-Wide

Our grounding in practice provides a unique basis for improving the quality of out-of-school opportunities field-wide. Working on a system-building level, we know not only the theories of what to do, we know the actualities of how to do it well.

Nationally, we are leveraging our experience to advocate for and promote effective afterschool programming for middle and high school youth. We are also working to engage afterschool more actively to support English language learners, immigrants, and their families.
