Claudia Weisburd

Executive Director
As executive director of the Center for Afterschool Education, Foundations, Inc., Dr. Claudia Weisburd directs the professional development, training, and technical assistance programs, along with the development of publications, and the design and operation of Foundations’ pre-K through high school afterschool programs, including the secondary school Homework Zone program.

In her work to advance the quality of afterschool programs and the professionalization of the field, Claudia has spearheaded the pilot of the Afterschool Academies, a Charles Stewart Mott Foundation initiative to provide afterschool educators with professional development that focuses on integrating academic content into non-formal afterschool programming. She has also designed and conducted professional development trainings across the country, based on program models tested and refined in the Center’s own afterschool programs. Working with the School District of Philadelphia, Claudia has created and implemented afterschool academic enrichment and homework programs in thirty-eight high schools, and expanded the homework program to additional cities. She has also pioneered the use of practical tools afterschool educators can use to build language skills and literacy in English language learners.

Under a grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Claudia wrote and produced Academic Content, After-School Style: A Notebook and Guide, a professional development guide for afterschool staff. She is the co-author of Afterschool Style in Practice: 25 Skill-Building Meetings for Success; GraffitiWall®; Celebrate Success RFP Project: English and Math in Action for Upper Grades; More Than Just Talk: English Language Learning in Afterschool; Global GraffitiWall and the Homework Time Action Pack.

Claudia began her career with the New York City Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, specializing in city-wide events and public relations, then taught in New York City pre-schools. She earned her PhD, MS, and BS degrees at Cornell University, with a focus on international development, adult learning, and non-formal education. She subsequently led an urban planning and environmental education program in Senegal, conducted training for development in the Caribbean and East Africa, and taught in France. Domestically, she continued her non-formal education work, serving as Director of the Community Literacy Program at Temple University (encompassing a national ESL and service learning project); directing adult ESL training for Literacy Volunteers, NY; and creating training and outreach programs for several award-winning, community-based housing projects.
