New Arts, Education and Technology Project to Prepare Youth for Success in the 21st Century

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

The Office of Pennsylvania State Representative Dwight Evans, Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corporation (OARC) and Foundations, Inc., are working collaboratively to launch a new venture based in Northwest Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Center for Arts and Technology (PCAT).

Currently in the pilot phase and slated for formal launch later this year, PCAT is preparing today’s youth for economic success in the 21st century. PCAT offers training and hands-on experience in the arts and technology to youth ages 14 to 21, giving them the skills they need to compete in the work force of the future.

For over 20 years, Representative Dwight Evans and OARC have revitalized neighborhoods, improved education and created a thriving business environment in Northwest Philadelphia. Since 1992, Foundations, Inc. has been working to improve the quality of the educational experience for youth nationwide. Currently Foundations manages four schools for the School District of Philadelphia through its Neighborhood School Network (NSN).

Together, this creative team has had a major impact on the schools and neighborhoods of Northwest Philadelphia over the past 8 years by creating an infrastructure of programs and regional endeavors. Now they bring their collective experience and expertise to PCAT.

As a pilot, PCAT launched an urban farm and marketplace program at Martin Luther King High School called “Seeds for Learning.” The program includes an urban farm, summer programs, a farm stand and a fully functioning greenhouse which allow students to learn year round. The entire program takes place on the grounds of the school.

The program also features a small youth-run business component called the Marketplace, which sells healthy snacks purchased from a local co-op. “Seeds for Learning” affords students an opportunity to develop their skills and interests in science, in a very unique “hands-on”, outdoor experience.

PCAT also began TIPS, Technology is Power Seminar, providing training for Microsoft Certification. TIPS is also planning to offer computer graphics and training. Both programs will be eligible for high school or college credit.

In addition to these exciting programs, PCAT is developing programs in Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Culinary Arts, Technology Careers and Environmental Design, including exploration of alternative energy sources such as biodiesel technology. PCAT is also planning to build a “state of the art” site for artist studios. This facility will be designed to address the current needs for culturally enriching and productive learning experiences, making this facility a great asset to the broader community.

PCAT will energize the entire community, bringing together artisans, educators and business partners in an innovative manner. It will support Philadelphia’s efforts to prepare our youth for success in school, employment and life.
